If you have legality questions regarding music ripping from Spotify, this FAQ is supposed to help you get your answers.
Is music ripping from Spotify legal?
Well, there never were such cases in the court so we can’t guarantee it. However, as far as we know it’s totally legal to record streams from analog or Internet radios. And we like thinking of Spotify as some sort of Internet radio, just a little bit more advanced.
Does Spotify itself allow ripping of their music?
Their end user agreement says that you are not allowed to do that:
For the avoidance of doubt, you agree that you may not (without limitation):
1. copy, reproduce, “rip”, record, make available to the public or otherwise use any part of the Spotify Software Application or the Spotify Service or its content (including but not limited to tracks, images and text) in a manner not expressly permitted under this Agreement;
If I’m ripping music from Spotify do I risk getting banned from using their service?
Absolutely not. There is no way for them to tell if anyone’s ripping their music stream. Well, unless you decide to tell them that by yourself.
Is it legal to share ripped music with friends and / or to distribute it on the Internet?
Formally speaking — no, it’s not legal. However, it’s up to you to decide what you want to do with your music…
